Huge oak tree cut down by Boen

Large Oak Tree cut down in Clearwater, Fl

“Jeff Boen, left, and Pete Peterson use a two-man chain saw to cut a cross-section from the huge live oak [tree] that stood near the Calvary Baptist Church in Clearwater, Fl…[Boen’s Tree Service removed the tree] to make way for a church auditorium. An environmental official said the tree was 250 to 300 years old, possibly the oldest living thing in the city, and might have lived another century or two had it been left standing. The church’s project administrator said that where the tree stood was the only land available for the auditorium and that the building could not be designed around the tree.” Boen’s Tree Service has been proudly serving the communities of Belleair, Clearwater, Dunedin, Odessa, Oldsmar, Palm Harbor, Safety Harbor, Tarpon Springs, Trinity & West Chase since 1977.

Boen’s Tree Service rescues cat from tree in Clearwater

“Clearwater—If a screaming cat get stuck in your tree and no one will help, what do you do? Call your congressman! That’s what Sue Basil and her neighbor Joan Davis did after the Clearwater fire department, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the police, the sheriff’s department, and county dog control wouldn’t help remove Tosha, A neighborhood tiger cat, from a tree. ‘She had been up there since 5 PM (Thursday), maybe earlier,’ said Ms Basil, of 2077 Whitney Dr., before the rescue Friday afternoon. ‘We called all over and finally called U.S. Rep. (C. W. Bill) Young as a last resort,’ she said.  Young, who represents southern Panellus County, had a solution. He suggested that the woman call Boen’s Tree Service in Clearwater for help. That was the beginning of the end of 24 hours of worry and I day long telephone campaign that the two undertook to save Tosha. ‘I called [Boen’s Tree Service] and asked how much it would cost to get one of those things that trims limbs out here, said Joan Davis. Only I told them I didn’t want to trim trees, I wanted to get a cat. Boen’s was sympathetic.’ The tree service, which sometimes answers such calls, sent Mark Chandler, a 25 year old, part-time tree surgeon and student, to retrieve the cat for free. Chandler hoisted himself up into the tree until he and Tosha were face-to-face about 25 feet above the ground. The last time Chandler rescued a cat he put it in a pillowcase to keep it from jumping. But after 24 hours or so sranded in a tree during an unusual cold night, Tosha seem to welcome the escort. The cat was treated to a bowl of milk. The little victim had finally been saved from the cold because a congressman knew who to call.” Boen’s Tree Service has been proudly serving the communities of Belleair, Clearwater, Dunedin, Odessa, Oldsmar, Palm Harbor, Safety Harbor, Tarpon Springs, Trinity & West Chase since 1977.
